Back in the early 1990s football on the television was in short supply or about to disappear behind a paywall with Sky. So it was a bit of a treat for Channel 4 to pull the rights to Serie A football out of the bag. From that opening game between Sampdoria and Lazio, a generation of football fans were hooked on the Italian game. Football in Italy suddenly seemed more accessible than football in England and thanks to the excellent James Richardson and Football Italia it was produced in style. This is my tribute to that cultural phenomenon, an image that encompasses great players, shirts, stadiums and fanatical supporters.
